November Library Happenings

Some November Dates to Remember. 1: All Saints’ Day; 2: Start Daylight Standard Time, turn clocks back 1 hour at 2 a.m.; 3: Housewife’s Day; 4: Election Day; 5: Guy Fawkes Day; 10: Marine Corps Birthday and Sadie Hawkins Day; 11: Veterans’ Day; 13: World Kindness Day; 15: America Recycles Day; 16-22 American Education Week; 17: World Peace Day; 18: Mickey Mouse’s Birthday; 21: Pilgrims Landed at Plymouth Rock; 22: National Adoption Day and 27: Thanksgiving Day.  November is also the month to remember Native American Heritage, Adoption Awareness, Child Safety and Protection, Apples and Christmas Seals.

BOOK SALE on Friday, December 5th and Saturday, December 20th.  The Friends of the library have a book sale on the first Friday and the third Saturday of every month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The library will open 1 hour late at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 19th for Staff Training.

Food For Fines – From Monday, Oct. 27th through Wednesday, Nov. 26th; if you have overdue fines, you may exchange cans or packages of non-perishable food at the rate of $1.00 off your overdue fines total for each item donated.  Fines for lost or damaged items and collection agency fees cannot be exchanged for food items.

GED CLASSES.  Next class at the library is from February 10th to April 2nd, 2009. Southwestern Illinois College hosts GED classes at the library twice a year. Classes meet in the Community Room on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 8:50 p.m. for 8 weeks. Register for the course at the first meeting. VOTER REGISTRATION.  The last day to register to vote prior to the November 4, 2008 General Election is October 7, 2008.  Registrations cannot be taken between October 8th and November 5th. Registration re-opens November 6th. Voters may register at the library from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and Wednesday evening from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  Ask for Jeanne or Denise. When a person registers to vote, they must show two types of identification, one must have their current address, and they must present a photo I.D. It is also required to use the social security number (at least the last four digits) or the drivers license number.

LIBRARY BOARD MEETING. The library board meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm (unless noted otherwise). The public is encouraged to attend as plans for the future of the library are discussed.
